Catholics Attack 'Angels and Demons'

I didn't read the whole article because I was afraid there would be plot spoilers (I'm halfway through the book right now). I remember when The Da Vinci Code came out and Catholic priests were telling their parishioners not to go see it. This kind of attitude does not stop people from reading books or seeing movies. When someone tells you not to do something, it just makes you want to do it even more!

This is like banning Harry Potter books in libraries. It's absurd. These are FICTIONAL BOOKS, people. I thought The Da Vinci Code was a great book - but does that mean that I believe that Jesus had kids and His descendents are walking the earth today? No! Banning books/movies is so medieval. And if the Church is worried about getting a bad rep, too late. The media's already brainwashed people into thinking that every priest is a child molestor and every Christian is a psycho.

I love the book, that being said, I can judge between fantasy and reality (I think), so that puts me one up on most liberals.
That being said, there are themes toward the end of the book that sorta disturb me and I am not even Catholic.

Hey, remember the "satanic Verses", the Church at least asked people not to "support" these movies by paying to see them. Rule of capitalism, no demand no product. They haven't asked any confessions from people who have seen the movie, threatened anybody by excommunication.

On the other hand couple Moolahs issued fatvas asking for Salman Rushdie's head on a silver platter. Any Hollywood types have the balls to make a movie out of Satanic verses ?

Sad but true...

When The Satanic Verses was published, the Ayatollah Khomeini called on all good Muslims to kill Salman Rushdie and his publishers.

When The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons were made into movies, leaders in the Church simply asked people not to go see them.

But it's Islam that is the Religion of Peace!

Belvedere54 disagrees: the DaVinci Code and Angels and Demons are both unsparingly absurd, pure fiction, and plausible to Catholic haters. To simply say, "but it's entertainment!" is not satisfactory when roman-collared authority figures are made out to look like conspirators. Sorry, kid.

You hit the nail on the head: pure fiction.

If they're plausible to Catholic haters, so what? If they hate the Church, they hate the Church.

I'm Roman Catholic and thoroughly enjoy the books. I KNOW that they're fictional, so it's not like they've changed my mind about everything I believe. I know the difference between fiction and non-fiction.

If other Catholics are upset about the books or the movies, I suggest they first read the books (because I bet many of them never read them) or simply not see the movie. There shouldn't be any uproar about it.
